Preconception Health and Early Pregnancy

Why preconception health matters 

Almost half of pregnancies are unplanned. The health of parents prior to conception establishes the foundation for their new child’s health throughout his or her life. 

The goals of preconception care are to improve the health status of women and men before conception and to reduce behaviors and individual and environmental factors that could contribute to poor maternal and child health outcomes. 

Health care providers should encourage persons considering pregnancy to schedule a visit to discuss preconception health and the optimization of maternal and fetal outcomes.  Use the resources below to help guide discussions with your clients on preconception health and early pregnancy care:
