Celebrating Health Information Professionals (HIP) Week: October 21-25

October 21-25, 2024 is Health Information Professionals (HIP) Week.  The theme this year is:

Your path, your story.

HIP Week is a celebration of the health information profession and a demonstration of the many ways this community moves our world forward.

Certified Health Information Management (CHIM) Professionals are on the frontline of health data – collecting it, protecting it and transforming it into the information required throughout health care and beyond. CHIM professionals are competent in many different practice areas, including information governance, data quality, clinical knowledge, analytics, privacy and technology.

What do Health Information Professionals do?

Health Information Professionals transform data into valuable information and ensure health information is accurate and relevant. They impact the quality of care that Islanders receive, as their work informs evidence-based clinical and policy decisions and helps to determine funding distribution throughout the health system.

Education and maintaining certification

To earn a CHIM professional designation, candidates must graduate from an accredited HIM program and successfully complete the national certification examination. To maintain certification, members must renew an annual membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA), uphold the professional code of ethics and complete the required continuing professional education credits on a three-year rotation.

At Health PEI, CHIMs make knowledge visible in various areas, including:

  • Health Records departments (manager, health record specialists, coding specialists, release of information clerks)
  • Cancer Registry (manager, certified tumour registrars)
  • Records and Information Management (RIM) Team (RIM Coordinators)
  • eHealth Programs (health information specialists, clinical analyst)
  • Health Analytics (health information specialists)

Happy HIP Week and a huge thank you to all our valued CHIMs at Health PEI!
