CEO Message: Mourning the passing of Dr. Angus Beck

The following message is distributed to all Health PEI staff and physicians on behalf of Mel Fraser, CEO, and Dr. Javier Salabarria, Medical Director of psychiatry.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Angus Beck on May 8, 2024.

Dr. Beck was a pillar of the Department of Psychiatry. Upon completion of his Psychiatry Residency, he began working on the adult inpatient psychiatry units in 1984.

During these first years in practice, he cared for countless Islanders with patience and compassion. Approximately 10 years later, he found his “second home” at the McGill Community Mental Health Centre. As one of the first psychiatrists to work with Community Mental Health, he helped develop a collaborative team approach to patient care which has been an example for all of his colleagues over the subsequent 30 years of his career.

He was dedicated and passionate about his career and always had time for his patients and coworkers. There was no doubt that he loved being a physician.

In addition, he was an extremely talented athlete and musician. He loved hockey and played centre for the Prince Edward Islanders 1969-70 team. Dr. Beck was inducted into the PEI Sports Hall of Fame.

His musical talents were well known as he frequently orchestrated “jam sessions” with friends and colleagues. Dr. Beck was truly talented and respected.

Dr. Angus Beck will be greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all Islanders.

The Dr. Angus Beck Comfort and Care Fund has been established for anyone wishing to make donations. The fund will be used toward mental health initiatives for local individuals and organizations.

Visitation and funeral will be held in Charlottetown. For more details please view his obituary.

Sincerely,
Mel and Javier
