Hi everyone,
As we continue to move forward from the findings of the Executive Compensation Audit, I want to thank you for your professionalism and steady commitment during this time of change. Your focus on delivering excellent health care and supporting one another has been essential.
Health PEI is a large and complex system. To deliver high-quality, accessible care to Islanders, the health system must be well managed. Over the past year, we’ve made real progress, reducing wait times for critical services and increasing access to primary care.
While restructuring the executive team was not one of our initial priorities, the Auditor General’s report created an important opportunity to correct issues from the past and at the same time, strengthen our leadership structure. We have done this by building a more streamlined executive team focused on improving access to health care and driving accountability and performance across the organization.
Effective June 16, 2025, Health PEI will implement a streamlined Executive Leadership Team (ELT). This is an important step in restoring public trust and ensuring our leadership reflects the highest standards of accountability, transparency, and integrity.
Key changes include:
- The addition of a Chief of Governance and Risk, who will lead governance, enterprise risk management, and internal audit.
- The creation of a Chief of People and Professional Practice, focused on human resources, workforce recruitment, leadership development, workplace safety and wellness, and professional practice for both nursing and allied health.
- The development of the Provincial Chief of Nursing, Professional Practice and System Integration role within the Department of Health and Wellness, which will strengthen system-wide coordination and nursing leadership across the province.
- The Chief Financial Officer has a reporting relationship to the HPEI Board Audit, Risk and Planning Committee.
We also want to congratulate and sincerely thank Marion Dowling, Chief Nursing, Quality and Professional Practice Officer, who has accepted the role of Provincial Chief of Nursing, Professional Practice and System Integration (PCNPPSI) with the Department of Health and Wellness. This new position highlights the importance of nursing leadership across the health system. Moving the PCNPPSI role to the Department will improve coordination across the system, bring nursing perspectives into government policy, and support a strategic plan to strengthen the nursing workforce.
Throughout this transition, our focus remains clear: delivering safe, high-quality care to Islanders. We are committed to open communication, supporting our teams, and building a leadership culture that reflects the values of the public we serve.
We will immediately begin the process of recruitment. The ELT positions will be recruited openly and transparently, and we remain committed to sharing our progress as we proceed.
We want to thank our colleagues in the Department of Health and Wellness, Treasury Board and the Public Service Commission for their collaboration and support of this work.
Thank you for your continued commitment to caring for Islanders.
Sincerely,
Mel
