Dear staff,
I’m writing to share that Dr. Gil Grimes has submitted his resignation from practice in O’Leary, effective September 6. Dr. Grimes is leaving to be closer to his family in the United States.
I want to personally thank him for his work on PEI since 2008 and wish him and his family the best in the future. I haven't been here for very long, but I have heard so many positive things about Dr. Grimes and his efforts to go above and beyond for his patients every day. He has been a leader among staff, an excellent clinician, and an important figure in the community. There is no doubt he will be dearly missed by Health PEI colleagues, his patients, and the health system.
A letter has been sent to each of his 885 patients with instructions for care, including how to place their names upon the patient registry. All of Dr. Grimes’ former patients will have immediate access to the Unaffiliated Virtual Care Program through Maple, where they will be able to request consultations with a provider at no cost.
Our primary care and medical affairs teams have been working hard to build capacity in West Prince, including the recent establishment of the O’Leary Health Centre patient medical home where Dr. Grimes works with three physician colleagues and a nurse practitioner.
While we do not have a current provider to take on the patients assigned to Dr. Grimes, we are heavily recruiting in West Prince as we are across the Island. West Prince has successfully recruited two new physicians in 2024, one who began seeing patients in March and another joining in September. Our hope is Dr. Grimes patients and those on the registry will soon have affiliated care as we build our teams.
Thank you to Dr. Grimes for your work and commitment to Islanders. You have made a positive and indelible mark on the lives of many. And thank you to the teams working to build capacity for delivering care everywhere.
Mel
