Climb Mt. Everest Challenge Toolkit

The name of the game is to climb the equivalent distance that Sir Edmund Hillary climbed from base camp to the summit of Mt. Everest.  Sir Edmund Hillary did this in 47 days but you will have 56 days or 8 weeks to do it.  The total distance to climb Mt. Everest is 58, 070 steps.

This is equivalent to:

  • PCH stairs have 27 steps/flight so 2,150 flights going up = Mt Everest
  • An average home has 14 steps/flight so 4148 flights going up = Mt Everest
  • Credit Union Place has 22 steps/flight so 2640 flights going up = Mt Everest

Staff who reach the peak of Mount Everest at the end of the 8 weeks will have a chance to win a designated prize.

Benefits of climbing stairs

  • Adding stairs to your day can add years to your life.  Studies show that risk of cardiovascular disease and other life-threatening illnesses is lower among regular stair climbers.
  • Using the stairs requires no special skill, equipment or clothing and it burns twice as many calories as walking.
  • Daily living activities like climbing the stairs can make a significant contribution to the 30 minutes of physical activity we all need....everyday.
  • Physical activities like stair climbing are a great way to cope with job-related stress.

How to run the Climb Mt. Everest Campaign in your unit or site

  • Promote through the unit or building
  • It is on the honour system.
  • Post the spread sheet in different units/departments and staff sign up if they want.
  • Send the rules to all staff too.
  • Line up a bragging rights item to celebrate the successful.
  • At the end of the challenge, more than one person may have reached the top.  In that case, have a draw for the gift card or explore whether smaller prizes to participants is an options.
  • Provide every participant with a certificate.
