From the desk of Dr. Michael Gardam, Health PEI CEO
One of the many great things about living on PEI is we get to celebrate Pride twice. Sure, wave the flag in June. But let’s do it all over again in July!
Pride PEI has a number of great events planned, and I encourage you to check out their schedule.
We take the concept of equity, diversity, and inclusion very seriously. It’s an area where we have not always excelled, but we are making progress. The work has to continue to ensure all people are lifted up and cared for in the way they deserve.
Last week, we announced an updated policy which expands the list of insured procedures for gender affirming care. This was a long process, and one we could not have accomplished without the input, wisdom, and guidance of community members from Gender Affirming Care PEI and Health PEI’s steering committee for gender affirming care. With their help, we were able to make their priorities into policy. PEI is now a leader in Canada for gender affirming care.
It all comes from listening. Health care has been administered from the top down for too long. We also recently introduced Islanders to our two outstanding Mi’kmaq Health Systems Navigators for the Island. The need for these positions was pointed out by the Mi’kmaq community, and we were proud to come to the table to help support them.
There is so much work ahead. But there’s celebrating to be done, too. That’s why I’d love for you to join me in the PEI Pride Parade in Charlottetown this Saturday from noon until 1 p.m.. We’re gathering as many Health PEI employees as possible (and friends and family) to march together in support of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Please email HPEIComms@ihis.org to let us know you’re coming so we can get an idea of numbers before the big day.
I really hope to see you there.
Happy Pride Week!
Michael
