Note from Michael March 8, 2023 | Happy International Women’s Day!

From the desk of Dr. Michael Gardam, Health PEI CEO

Notes from MichaelHi everybody,

Happy International Women’s Day! At Health PEI, we know as well or better than anyone the immense expertise, ability, and value women contribute to all levels of the organization.

Today is a great opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements of the women in our lives, workplace and our Island healthcare system. At Health PEI we continue to support the need for gender equity for people of all ages, backgrounds and positions, who play a unique role in delivering services to Islanders across the province. Today is a day to show gratitude for all the things you do!

March is also a month where we share the love for many of our professionals who go above and beyond every day.

National Kidney Month is a time to highlight the importance of kidneys to overall health and to help reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and associated health problems impacting Islanders. The PEI Renal Program and the Provincial Renal Clinic investigates and aides in the management of renal (kidney) disease and provides services, assistance and support from a comprehensive health care team. Thank-you for the work you do that is so valued by the Islanders you serve and your colleagues!

National Nutrition Month, celebrated in March, stresses the importance of a balanced diet and exercise, while promoting the transformative powers of healthy food choices. Our Registered Dietitians have many roles within Health PEI by educating Islanders to support healthy eating and positive eating behaviours, all of which promote healthy development and prevent chronic disease. Pharmacy Appreciation Month (PAM) is the annual national campaign that shines a spotlight on all things pharmacy! It’s clear that the contributions of Canada’s pharmacy teams over the past few years have been remarkable. From supporting our communities through the pandemic, helping patients navigate care amidst our current health-care crisis, managing ongoing drug shortages and everything in between, pharmacy professionals have been an immense force. Governments and Canadians are recognizing the tremendous value of our pharmacy teams. The role of pharmacy professionals is growing with new authorities and funding for pharmacy services being implemented in many parts of Canada. Join the conversation on social media (#PAM2023) and take the time to thank and appreciate your pharmacy team and our broader pharmacy community. Happy Pharmacy Appreciation Month and #ThankYouPharmacy!

National Social Work Month raises public awareness about how the contributions of this essential profession improves our province and our healthcare system! At Health PEI, Social workers have many diverse roles within our hospitals, inpatient and outpatient services, mental health and addictions and our community-based services and programs. Each day social workers help break down barriers to empower Islanders to overcome challenges so they can live more fulfilling, enriched lives, thank-you to our PEI Social Workers! As the Canadian Association of Social Workers notes, social workers support people in navigating complex systems and are uniquely positioned to identify and address systemic gaps, provide key services and programs, and strengthen communities, all while applying our skills to build a more just world.

Thanks,
Michael
