Note from Michael May 1 2023 | Celebrating National Physicians' Day and Mental Health Week

From the desk of Dr. Michael Gardam, Health PEI CEO

Notes from MichaelHi everybody,

We have two big recognition events this week to celebrate as we dive into another week!

National Physicians Day

Today is National Physicians’ Day, a special time to honour the terrific leadership, service, and tireless efforts of our physicians across Prince Edward Island. May 1 was chosen in recognition of Dr. Emily Stowe, the first female physician to practice in Canada.

Throughout a global pandemic and the ongoing health care staffing challenges, our physicians have adapted to drastic changes in their work and lives to continue to provide optimal care to Islanders. Whether it is in acute care, family medicine clinics and patient medical homes, long-term care, operating rooms, or any of the other hundreds of settings where physicians provide care, you have demonstrated extraordinary dedication and compassion in the face of adversity.

Being a physician is not easy, so thank you to every one of you! Enjoy this day devoted to you!

Mental Health Week

Mental Health Week is from May 1-7.  This is a time to recognize the incredible work and determined efforts of our trained mental health professionals who work within a network of mental health and addictions programs and services offered in our Mental Health and Addictions facilities, hospitals and within the community.

This is also  time to raise awareness about the importance of mental health among our staff. Mental health has become easier to talk about within the workplace, but there is still more to be done promoting wellness and removing stigma around our mental health.

This week, our communications team will be sharing several stories about mental health through our social media channels, newsletters and media.

For all those who work within our many MH&A areas, your work is helping create happier and more fulfilling lives for Islanders and their families, thank you!

Thanks,
Michael
