Note from Michael, Dec. 17, 2021 | COVID and Omicron update; work from home where possible

From the desk of Dr. Michael Gardam, Health PEI CEO

Hi Everybody:

I warned you we would be sending frequent updates…as of this morning, we have had two exposures in Charlottetown that have required us to quarantine some staff pending testing.  In the past, we have usually been able to avoid healthcare-related transmission; however, I suspect things are going to be different from this point forward.

Experience in other jurisdictions suggest that the combination of high Omicron infectivity and the lack of protection from infection despite two doses of vaccine will lead to much more transmission than we are used to.

Because of this, we will be moving to working from home where possible effective Monday. Please consider what you need to bring home with you today.  Obviously if you need to come to your workplace, you can continue to do so.  I would suggest however that you keep your masks on as much as possible around others.

As this situation is evolving rapidly, there may be more updates as the day goes on.

Thanks everybody.  None of us wanted these disruptions around the holidays for a second year in a row, but unfortunately here we are.

Please send questions, comments, or submissions for these notes to emclean@gov.pe.ca, subject line “Notes for Michael”.
