Note from Michael, Jan. 5, 2022 | A round up to save your inbox

From the desk of Dr. Michael Gardam, Health PEI CEO

Hi everybody,

There have been a lot of emails flying around since the Omicron variant and more positive cases started emerging on PEI and across Canada and the world. I’ve been sending a lot of them and I hope you have found them useful. I also know it’s easy to miss some of these messages.

Below is a bit of a summary of what’s been sent over the past week or so, with links where possible to the document on the Staff Resource Centre COVID-19 Hub. We’ll try to do these summaries weekly.

Masking patients, visitors and Partners in Care in hospitals and health centres (NEW GUIDANCE):

We have been providing medical masks to individuals instead of their own masks for some time at our facilities to better protect everyone.  However, more people are wearing their own medical masks and N95s or KN95s when coming to our facilities.  Moving forward, people wearing a medical mask or N95/KN95 do not need to change masks in hospitals, health centres or other care areas. People wearing a cloth mask should still be given a medical mask.

This direction does not apply to Long Term Care, which should continue with its current practice of providing medical masks to Partners in Care and visitors.

Work Isolation, Contact Tracing and PPE:

Three important guidance documents for use during the COVID-19 pandemic and Omicron variant wave were sent on Dec. 26:

How to Mask:

Visitor Policy:

Third dose vaccination clinics for Staff:

Fast Pass for testing:

  • In order to meet the demand for testing for work isolation, health system employees are eligible for a priority Fast Pass through COVID-19 testing clinic lines if they:
    -  have an upcoming shift and require testing beforehand
    -  are symptomatic and have not been diagnosed with COVID-19

Employees are encouraged to reach out to the new COVID-19 Employee Wellness contact email ( for approval to access testing opportunities with reduced wait times.

COVID staff wellness line:

  • Staff can now contact a COVID-19 Wellness Team member by emailing to ask questions and find needed support to help them manage difficult and stressful situations.  Inquiries to will be monitored from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on weekends.

Notes From Michael:

  • I try to send a note a day to staff and physicians to keep you all up-to-date and connect to what’s happening with COVID. They are all archived on the Staff Resource Centre and include insight into how Omicron spreads and updates about what other parts of Canada and the world are seeing, tips on how children react to COVID, addressing the issue of stigma, to name a few topics.

Please send questions, comments, or submissions for these notes to, subject line “Notes for Michael”.
