Our understanding and appreciation of the importance of sufficient and quality rest is growing. Getting the correct amount of quality sleep is essential to people’s ability to learn, process memories, think and problem-solve. Additionally, sleep helps restore the body’s energy, repair muscle tissue and triggers the release of hormones that effect growth and appetite. In health care, good rest for our employees is important, and can be particularly challenging in a shift-work environment. Persons who persistently struggle with getting sufficient quality sleep are at higher risk for conditions like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, headaches and depression. Educating employees regarding the importance of rest, and tips on sleep hygiene is an important part of the workplace wellness framework.
